| "A
must read for anyone experiencing chronic musculoskeletal
pain." *
Prolotherapy is also known as nonsurgical ligament
reconstruction, and is permanent treatment for
chronic pain. Prolotherapy or Ligamentous Reconstructive
Therapy is a simple, natural technique that harnesses
the same repair mechanism that allows a broken
bone to fix. When a joint, ligament, or tendon
is worn, torn or damage, a chronic inflammation
seems to be initiated by the body. It just does
not seem to finish the process. By injecting,
the process seems to complete its repair goals.
The basic mechanism of Prolotherapy, then is to
initiate the healing process that the body seems
to need just a little help to complete. A substance
(often sugar water, diluted in saline and local
anesthetic) is injected a long the insertion points
of the structure to the bone. The resulting localized
inflammation triggers a wound healing mechanism
which is quite similar to a broken bone fixing
itself. If a bone is broken, there are a few days
to a week of rather intense to aching pain, stiffness,
and swelling and bruising. A cast is placed on
for 6-12 weeks, in which the bone repairs, the
bone pain may even reoccur throughout the period
of time associated with some tingling or even
itching. Eventually a new bone has replaced and
the area is stronger than before.
